Easily accessible from Paris by train, the Château de Versailles feels a world away from the French capital. The Galerie des Glaces (Hall of Mirrors) is, in all its unapologetic opulence, a must-see. It was here on 28 June 1919 that the Treaty of Versailles, which brought an end to World War I, was signed. Louis XIV’s famous symmetrical gardens also make for a pleasurable stroll; in fact, the Sun King was so proud of his gardens that he wrote the text Manière de Montrer les Jardins de Versailles (“How to show the gardens of Versailles”) at the end of his reign.
