City Guide
Perth
Perth is quickly becoming one of Australia’s coolest cities with hip bars, snazzy restaurants and new hotels popping up at lightning speed. Once in the shadow of more happening counterparts such as Sydney and Melbourne, Perth’s list of must-dos these days changes daily. But this is only one part of the Western Australian city’s appeal. Perth still offers abundant opportunities to slow down and delve into the quieter side of things, with its pristine beaches, stunning parks, world-class vineyards, scenic landscapes and diverse wildlife.
When to go
The spring months from September to November are a wonderful time to visit, with warm days and cool nights, but summer is when the city truly comes alive. There are pop-up markets, outdoor film festivals, art festivals… the list goes on. It’s also the best time for visiting the beach. The sweet spots in the calendar would be early to mid-December before the Western Australian school holidays begin, and February, after the school holidays end – you’ll get to enjoy everything summer has to offer with fewer crowds.
How to get around
Public transport in Perth is safe and clean, but isn’t as well-connected as the systems you’ll find in other cities. You’re better off renting a car, which will allow you to travel to attractions outside the city with ease. Roads are easy to navigate and drivers are generally courteous. However, if you’re mainly moving in and around the CBD, use the Central Area Transit (CAT) buses, as parking downtown is notoriously expensive. The bus services are free, and you can hop on and off as often as you like.
