Melburnians are fiercely devoted to their city, and for good reason: the best of Australia comes together here

In Melbourne, reading a novel at a bar and sipping a glass of Chardonnay is a popular local pastime. But while the city is home to vibrant food and arts scenes, there’s so much more to it than its indoor pursuits. Like anywhere else in Australia, Melbourne is sports-mad, whether for tennis, rugby, cricket or – most passionately – AFL (Australian Football League). It isn’t short on nature, either: its network of unique villages is interspersed with bush and parkland, while its southern suburbs face out to sea.
When to go:
Unlike many other Australian cities, Melbourne genuinely has seasons – summers (December through February) are scorching hot and winters (June to August) are bone-shakingly chilly, but all have their charms. Warmer months are more conducive for exploring the town’s parklands and seaside, but there’s a wealth of indoor cultural and culinary activities to keep you entertained during colder spells.
How to get around:
Melbourne’s public transport system is among the best in Australia, and its tram network is its pride and joy. If you’re travelling farther afield, the metro trains work well. However, you’ll get the most out of your visit if you do as the locals do and ride a bike.
