Less than two hours from Colombo stands Lunuganga, the country estate and residence of the late Geoffery Bawa, Sri Lanka’s most celebrated architect. In 1948, Bawa bought a rundown 4.8ha rubber estate and turned it into a lush garden over the next 40 years. Guided tours run every day at 11 am, 2 pm and 3 pm across the frangipani gardens that sit by the banks of Dedduwa Lake, but if you fancy, you can stay overnight at one of the rooms, including the Geoffrey Bawa Suite, decked with artwork and the architect’s library.
