Kumortuli is a 300-year-old potter’s corner in north Kolkata that’s an integral part of the district – and one that’s a delight to visit, especially in the months leading up to Durga Pooja, an annual Hindu festival that takes place in Autumn. Artisans work painstakingly to create larger than life statues of gods and goddesses with bamboo, hay and mud. Once ready, the idols are painted by hand and used for worship in Indian cities or exported for festivals held abroad.
