My first flight on Singapore Airlines was in the 80s. It was a DC-10 and my family was on a holiday to the Philippines. I was in my early teens. As it was my first flight on SIA, I was very excited and was determined to enjoy every moment of it.
Once we were airborne, I asked the flight attendant if I could have some souvenirs. She was very obliging and returned quickly with playing cards and postcards. She even said that if the postcard was returned before we disembarked, the card would be posted free. I was very excited and quickly wrote a card to my aunt and returned it to her. It is the little things that count – as the saying goes. And it was this little gesture then that left a huge impression on me.
As such, every time I had the chance to travel on SIA, I would ask for souvenirs or newspapers. Each time I have never been disappointed. The cabin crew will not forget and will return later with my request. I did not have to remind them.
Over time, I have collected playing cards, board games and postcards. As I shuffle through my collection, one postcard caught my attention. It was of an SIA B747 with a commemorative logo at bottom right (above). It was marking SIA’s 30 years of aviation (1947 to 1977).
2017 is SIA’s 70th anniversary. It has come a long way. It has such exemplary customer service – and the simple gestures – that has made SIA a renowned airline in the world.
