To mark its 70th anniversary, Singapore Airlines brought together its current and former employees as well as their families at the SIA Family Day, held on May 20. Everyone had a good time participating in various activities, such as the Junior Cabin Crew Experience and the Safety Training Tour. There was also a carnival with a host of games and performances.
One of the highlights of the event was the launch of the Airline’s 70th anniversary commemorative book, A Great Adventure (above). The book – a collaboration between the Airline and Straits Times Press – chronicles the Airline’s milestones over the past seven decades, and tells the stories of the people behind its flight to success. Every member of staff received a copy.

A range of merchandise, all available on KrisShop, was also created to celebrate the anniversary. Among the memorabilia are exclusive jewellery collections created in collaboration with local designers – Orbit and North Star by Carrie K., and The Batik Jade Collection by Choo Yilin; co-branded apparel, such as local brand Binary Style’s travel-themed Flying High Scarf and a Pashma cashmere-silk scarf (above); and SevenTea, a fine green tea with notes of pomegranate blossoms, from local tea brand TWG Tea.
Other exclusive collectibles include a Tumi carry-on luggage, a Moleskine notebook with debossed batik-inspired print on the cover, a Precious Moments ‘Singapore Girl’ (70th-anniversary edition) and a box set of Hello Kitty dolls dressed in the four distinct colours of the Airline’s signature kebaya. On board selected flights in May, local favourites such as chicken rice and prawn noodles, ice cream in local flavours, and a Sunday Punch alcoholic cocktail were served to mark the occasion, and 70th anniversary-edition amenity kits were given out.
A special cover (above) was also commissioned for the May anniversary issue of SilverKris, the Airline’s award-winning inflight travel magazine. True to the spirit of the edition, which featured inspiring, thought-provoking pieces that focus on the theme ‘70 Reasons We Love To Travel’, its paper-cut cover showcased nature, urban experiences, and how people live and play.
Not forgetting the less fortunate, the Airline organised the SIA Charity Run 2017 (above) to raise funds for Community Chest, a local charity that supports some 80 social-service organisations. Held on October 8 at The Float @ Marina Bay, it comprised three race categories and a Wheelathon segment, in which 70 beneficiaries nominated by Community Chest participated in a 3km route tailored for wheelchair users.
The year-long celebrations culminated in a Charity Gala on October 12, with Tan Chuan-Jin, Speaker of Parliament and Advisor to the National Council of Social Service, as the guest of honour. Guests for the evening included the Airline’s business partners and loyal customers, who contributed generously towards the fundraising efforts for Community Chest, through the purchase of dinner tables and auction items as well as the sponsorship of the event. Hosted by Singapore Airlines, together with celebrated chefs from its International Culinary Panel and its Wine Consultants, the gala included highlights such as a special epicurean journey and a live auction of curated items, including a unique set of Hello Kitty dolls dressed in the Airline’s cabin crew heritage uniforms.
Singapore Airlines raised S$2.55 million from its three 70th anniversary fund-raising events: SIA Family Day, SIA Group Charity Run and SIA Charity Gala. A cheque was presented by SIA Chairman Mr Peter Seah and SIA CEO Mr Goh Choon Phong to Community Chest Chairman Mr Phillip Tan and Adviser to Community Chest Ms Jennie Chua at the close of the Charity Gala.
