Lawang Sewu (“Thousand Doors”) is a splendid colonial building that’s rumoured to be haunted. Originally the headquarters of the Dutch East Indies Railway Company, it was turned into a prison during WWII.

Try lumpia Semarang, a spring roll stuffed with bamboo shoots, dried shrimp and chicken or prawns, and served with a sweet chilli sauce.
Where to go to unwind?
Bandungan is a horticultural town situated about half an hour from the city. There’s a flower farm there called Setiya Aji that’s perfect for photo ops!
