Founded in 1964 by Sri Lankan painter and textile artist Barbara Sansoni, Barefoot is one of Colombo’s must-visit experiences. Locals and visitors alike come to enjoy a courtyard meal under the cool tree canopy twittering with birdsong, before exploring the art exhibitions in the gallery and thumbing local and international titles at the well-curated bookstore. The highlight, though, is the textile and homeware section upstairs, a treasure trove for souvenir-seekers with colourful bedspreads, table linens, cushion covers and more – not to mention local pickles, natural soaps and other products to enjoy after you leave Sri Lanka.
