Safari and South Africa go hand in hand, but most of the reserves that the Big Five – lion, elephant, buffalo, leopard and rhinoceros – call home are at least three hours’ drive from Johannesburg, except for Dinokeng Game Reserve. A mere hour from Johannesburg by car, Dinokeng is ideal for a day trip or brisk overnighter. You can take a self-drive and try your luck at spotting wildlife, or stay at one of the lodges and book a drive with a ranger to improve your chances.
