The Xintiandi area is the gleaming central pillar of Shanghai’s high-end shopping and socialising scenes, but it offers more than just surface-level glitz. One of the district’s best stores is Alter, a multi-label concept boutique housed in the Xintiandi Style shopping mall. Founder Sonja Long Xiao has filled the place with apparel from labels across China not always represented elsewhere in the city; there’s an in-house bagel shop, too.
