Looking out over the cultural boulevard of North Terrace, this handsome sandstone building houses almost 47,000 works that juxtapose early colonial depictions of Australia with an excellent collection of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island art. The must-see annual Tarnanthi exhibition showcases the stunning breadth of Australia’s vibrant First Nations artists every October to January. There are also fascinating galleries dedicated to classical Islamic art and the Arts & Crafts movement that sit alongside stunning immersive works by contemporary masters like Japanese artist Chiharu Shiota.
