Despite its name, iconic city-centre café “Sudden Death” has been going strong since 1928. Managed by the founder’s great-grandsons, its decor is beautifully out of time, with creaky wooden booths, pillars and arched mirrors making a fine backdrop to a glass of Lambic or Gueuze. For another brilliant traditional bar – this one a classic Flemish “brown bar”, so called because of the cigarette stains on the walls – try bohemian hangout Au Daringman.
