Avid traveller HY Tham has had four years to dream up her next adventure. The healthcare professional and long-time Singapore Airlines flyer decided to treat herself with a Business Class flight to Perth. Along with skydiving and a road trip along Margaret River, the flight experience on Singapore Airlines also greatly contributed to her recent incredible journey.
Before your recent trip, how long had it been since your last flight with Singapore Airlines (SIA)?
It had been four years since my last flight with Singapore Airlines (SIA) – it was a lovely pre-pandemic trip to Italy and London.
What did you miss most about travelling with SIA?
The comfort, familiarity and service.
Where did you travel to on your most recent trip?
Perth! My leave was approved quite late. I was scrolling through the list of destinations offered by SIA and settled on Perth after taking into account prices, flight duration and time differences to maximise the use of my leave as much as possible.
What made you decide to upgrade to Business Class?
I decided to upgrade because I hadn’t travelled for four years due to the pandemic and I’ve always wanted to try Business Class. I also really wanted to treat myself and indulge in a good holiday after working without much leave and saving up during the pandemic.
What was the Business Class SilverKris Lounge experience like?
The Business Class SilverKris Lounge is relaxing, quiet and peaceful. It’s the perfect place to wind down and rest before boarding the flight. My favourite features are the selection of food and drinks, as well as the shower facilities.
Was the boarding experience any different?
The entire experience was seamless – from checking in, resting in the lounge, embarking and disembarking. You also have the privilege to board the flight first. Once you’re settled into the seat, you’re served drinks and refreshments immediately. The seat was also fully-reclinable! Overall, there was less hustle and bustle compared to flying in Economy Class.
What did you enjoy most about the dining experience?
The dining experience was fantastic! I ordered Lobster Thermidor through the Book the Cook programme and it was fantastic. The lobster meat was succulent and fresh. On top of that, there was a selection of bread and croissants that were served warm.
Any little touches you appreciated during the flight?
I enjoyed the comfort along with the ease of travel. I also appreciated how the cabin crew took the effort to address me by name during my flight and that they confirmed my meals when I got on board.
How do you think the pandemic has changed attitudes towards travel?
I think people are more inclined to travel to countries with higher vaccination rates. Travellers are also more cautious when it comes to hygiene and bring masks and sanitising products along with them. Since the pandemic, travelling is definitely better appreciated, with people more eager for new experiences. In the past, while I was studying, I used to plan months ahead to backpack around Europe with my friends. This time with limited leave days to spare, I decided to travel on my own to Perth at the very last minute. I went skydiving and enjoyed the scenic routes while driving down to Margaret River.
Is it worth upgrading to Business Class for an all-out vacation?
I’d strongly support upgrading with a resounding ‘YES!’ It’s definitely worth every penny – with one important caveat: this will not be your last but the first of many to come.
