The slopes of the world’s greatest ski resorts and towns have long been favourite wintry destinations for powder-loving travellers. What many people don’t realise is that once the snow’s melted, many ski resorts offer a wealth of exciting and equally fun summertime activities, affording unforgettable summer vacations.
We’ve taken a tour of these five top ski resorts around the world to bring you the highlights of both their winter and summer offerings.
As the host of the 1994 Winter Olympics, the Norwegian town of Lillehammer – and the Hafjell resort within the town – offers tourists in Norway outstanding opportunities for winter sports adventuring, including tobogganing and bobsledding.
With a total of 31 different slopes and varied mountain and forest terrains, skiers, snowboarders and cross-country skiing enthusiasts are spoilt for choice. Moreover, Lillehammer’s fascinating collection of museums, churches and shops offer visitors an insightful and thoroughly enjoyable break from the slopes.
What to expect in summer:
During the summer months, Lillehammer is no less buzzing with activity. The famous Hafjell Bike Park presents MTB (mountain biking) trail-fans the opportunity to bike to their hearts’ content with over 25km and 14 individual trails on offer.
For golf enthusiasts, the 9-hole Hafjell park golf course awaits and for families (and the young at heart), the Hunderfossen Family Park and Jorekstad Water Park will provide countless hours of fun. The former is an amusement and adventure park offering some 50 exhilarating activities, ideal for the whole family. The latter is a water park with indoor and outdoor pools, water slides, diving boards, steam baths and saunas, creating the perfect setting in which to create those lifelong summer holiday memories.
