My most memorable flight with Singapore Airlines was on a flight way back in December 1998. Incidentally, it was also my first international flight.
I just turned eight years old then, flying from Manila to Singapore when my mom’s travel agent couldn’t put through our booking on another airline, and at the last minute, scheduled us on your flight instead.
Once we boarded, my now late-mom left me alone so she could go to the toilet. While she was away, one of the friendly Singapore Girls offered me something which I thought was a toothbrush for my mom so I accepted it anyway. Little did I know that it was a souvenir plane model of the aircraft.
I loved this toy the moment I set my eyes upon it, so much so that I’ve dreamed of becoming a pilot ever since. I’d hold it in my hands and run around corridors thinking that I was flying it. The only drawback then was it didn’t have tyres. So, being the imaginative child that I was, I took some wires, disassembled a toy car and wrapped its wheels around the plane so it could land safely.
I played with it as much as I could until I grew out of it. It now sits at my grandmother’s house in Kalibo.
It’s indeed very comforting to have an airline that inspires children to dare to dream. I’ve just become a citizen of Singapore and fly Singapore Airlines fairly frequently. Every time I do so, I always remember that I had a model aircraft that helps me remember my very first Singapore Airlines flight.
