PHOTOS: Mesmerising underwater images of mysterious marine creatures

French photographer Gabriel Barathieu – a resident of Mayotte island – spent his childhood in Landes, living steps away from the Atlantic Ocean. Upon moving to Reunion Island, he picked up underwater photography, a passion that inspired him to become certified in rebreather diving. The technique, which involves the use of a special apparatus, allows him to breathe underwater without producing bubbles. This helps him get close-ups of elusive marine creatures, such as those in this series of images, without startling them.
