It’s often the simplest pleasures in life that are the most memorable, and packing a picnic basket with your favourite goodies and heading to a picturesque location ranks up there for us.
From urban parks and botanical gardens to secluded beaches and nature reserves, our planet boasts plenty of perfect places to enjoy a couple of hours with good friends, delicious food and breathtaking views.
Central Park, New York, USA
One of the world’s most famous urban parks and easily its most iconic, New York’s Central Park provides a picnic backdrop worthy of a Hollywood blockbuster. Covering a vast 341 ha of prime central Manhattan real estate, the park offers picnickers more than a handful of ideal spots to choose from.
Whether it’s lazing on the Great Lawn or relaxing alongside one of the park’s impeccably manicured water features, a picnic here is virtually essential to any visit to the Big Apple. Combine your Central Park picnic outing with a visit to one of the adjacent museums and you have yourself a quintessential New York City adventure.
Point Reyes National Seashore, California, USA
Keen for a more rugged picnic location with wild coastal views? Point Reyes National Seashore in California’s Marin County is just the spot to satisfy that wanderlust for epic picnic adventures.
A vast nature reserve north of San Francisco, Point Reyes boasts undulating grassy hills ideal for hiking, camping and of course, picnicking. There is no entry fee to the nature reserve unless you want to camp overnight, in which case various overnight camping rates apply, depending on the number of people in your camping party.
When visiting Point Reyes expect to be awed by the majestic natural landscape, which includes endless miles of deserted beaches, fascinating rock formations and magnificent cliffs, all home to a remarkable population of various wildlife species including tule elks, elephant seals and a variety of bird species.
The Royal Crescent, Bath, UK
Located in the historic English city of Bath is an 18th-century architectural marvel, known affectionately as The Royal Crescent. This semicircular row of terraced houses curves for some 150 m around an immaculately cared-for lawn that is – simply put – just perfect for picnicking.
Arrive at the crescent with your travelling companions and some foodie treats, plonk yourself down on the verdant grass and enjoy a picnic in front of one of the best examples of Georgian architecture in all of the UK. Your Instagram followers will certainly appreciate the stunning view on their feed.
