Nasi lemak – a Malay dish of rice cooked in coconut milk and pandan leaf, accompanied by various fixings – is one of the city’s most popular dishes. While it’s readily available at hawker centres all across the island, we also suggest sampling The Coconut Club’s pricier (S$12.80) but utterly delicious version. What sets it apart is its fragrant Thai jasmine rice, cooked in rich coconut milk that’s laboriously hand-squeezed in-house. Order some accompanying otak-otak (grilled fish cake) and finish off your meal with a sweet, creamy bowl of cendol (jelly and red beans served in coconut milk and palm sugar syrup).
