Never mind the megaplex. The single-screen Scala Cinema is one of the last standalone theatres in Thailand – and perhaps the last functioning movie palace in all of Southeast Asia. The marquee features classic red letters put up by hand whenever screenings change. Inside, bronze Art Deco flowers accent the vaulted ceiling, while a man in a yellow sport jacket collects tickets as you enter the spacious hall. Tickets cost less than US$5, but the experience is priceless.
