1. Rustic elegance in the mountains
The Catskills, the picturesque mountain region just a couple hours north of New York City, continues to hone its reputation as a hip and relaxed getaway. Case in point: the opening of the Eastwind Hotel & Bar. The property, located near Windham Mountain’s ski resort, bike park and public golf course, leverages Scandinavian influences – think bleached wood and an outdoor sauna – for sophisticated simplicity and an upscale outdoor experience.
2. Designed with intention
Originally a 1920s lodge for outdoor enthusiasts, the inn has been restored and transformed into a modern escape with two main buildings and three Lushna cabins scattered on the hillside. Creative director Julija Stoliarova infused the two main buildings with Mid-Century design (clean lines and bold pops of colour) and leaned into Scandi-minimal décor for the cabins – some of the furniture is also custom-built with renewable wood.
3. Indoors and outdoors merge
A quiet escape as much as a home base for active adventures, Eastwind has a cosy communal salon with floor-to-ceiling windows to invite the light in during the day, and a full-service cocktail bar and fireplace for gathering at night. Outdoors, you’ll find two decks and a fire pit on the lawn to make the most of the natural surroundings. There’s also an events calendar of small outdoor concerts, morning yoga on the lawn and a monthly foraging walk.
4. Nature right outside your door
In addition to 16 rooms (two of which are suites and two are “writer’s studios” with desks and typewriters) split between the two main buildings, there are three freestanding A-frame cabins for design-forward glamping. Each Lushna cabin snugly fits a queen-sized bed dressed in Frette linens that abuts a triangular glass wall so you can wake up to views of the adjacent Windham Mountain. The main rooms offer more space and comforts such as Turkish rugs, Faribault wool plaid blankets, wireless speakers and bathrooms tucked behind black barn doors and fitted with farmhouse sinks and Zenology bath products.
5. The best of mountain living
For outdoor fun in all seasons, Eastwind offers use of gear such as bicycles and snow shoes, along with an outdoor wood barrel sauna to rest your bones. The overarching “keep it simple” philosophy extends to the bar, where you can pair your wine or cocktail with snacks such as hummus and veggie chips and charcuterie and cheese boards. Board games and a library of books are also on hand.
