Dining at Cut by Wolfgang Puck always feels like a special occasion. The glamorous touch afforded by the celebrity portraits on the walls, the smartly suited waitstaff, the tray arranged with five types of warm, house-made bread offered to every guest – all these factors and more combine to add a sense of grandeur to any dinner here.
A single bite of the Saga beef instantly reminds us why Cut deserves to be on the list of winners – it is done to perfection, with the marbled meat in the crispy crust gently melting in the mouth.
Yet what truly surprised us were the simple dishes. The humble fried Peewee potatoes – the restaurant’s take on the jacket potato – are a jumble of smashed potatoes, garlic aioli, cheddar, fried shallots and chives. It looks like it came straight from a family-style diner, yet this new side dish is supremely delicious and is our favourite dish of the evening – aside from the steak, of course.
A warm butterscotch crumble served with Tahitian vanilla ice cream completes the meal – yet another humble all-American dish, like the Peewee potatoes.
