Located in Australia’s most populous city and the capital of New South Wales, the Sydney Opera House is a stunning architectural marvel. The distinctive landmark stands resplendent at Bennelong Point in Sydney Harbour, and is home to multiple venues that host a wide variety of performing and visual arts events.
Danish architect Jørn Utzon claimed that his design of this UNESCO World Heritage site was inspired by the act of peeling an orange – hence the “shells” of the building’s soaring roof. But the roof also evokes an image of unfurled sails. And adorned with light-reflecting tiles, these billowing sails reflect the mood and colours of the harbour, blending seamlessly with the waterfront – the epitome of grace and beauty.
It’s no wonder that American architect Louis Kahn, in awe of the Sydney Opera House’s design, once said, “The sun did not know how beautiful its light was, until it was reflected off this building.”
