You know a Nala when you see one. It could be a dress, a tote bag, a cushioned stool or a notepad – all marked out by cheery, vibrant patterns inspired by Malaysia’s natural and cultural heritage, particularly Peranakan culture. Nala is the creation of Lisette Scheers, a Dutch woman born in Singapore who has lived most of her life in Malaysia. With a background in graphic design and advertising, she creates and draws the patterns herself by hand. Named after Scheers’ daughter, Nala’s flagship store is located at the Bangsar Village II shopping mall. Or visit the brand’s showroom in the Bangsar neighbourhood. Set in a green-and-white kampung house, the store is an opportunity to get a feel of Old Malaya.
