Hakone is locally known for its volcanic vents and hot-spring culture, but the mountainous region offers so much more to lovers of the great outdoors. Ringed by several major mountain ranges, the massive Lake Ashinoko is home to a rare, partially submerged torii gate. The adventurous can try their hand at the strenuous central Mt Hakone hike, but the nearby Mt Kintoki comes highly recommended for its gentler climb, serene densely wooded trails and awe-inspiring views of Mt Fuji.
