Running south from Tiananmen Square, this is a modern Disneyfication of an ancient shopping district, and now the most popular tourist sight in Beijing for Chinese tourists. But between the cafés and fast food outlets, and especially in Dazhalan (Dashilan) Street off to the west, 150-year-old traditional shops survive in ancient premises. These include Neiliancheng with hand-made shoes, Shengxifu with traditional Peking Opera hats and Ruifuxiang with vast bolts of silk at local rather than tourist prices.
