Creaky floorboards are the least of your Halloween worries when you check into a room where the fear factor is only limited by your imagination.
Fairmont Banff Springs, Canada
This hotel in Canada’s Banff National Park has seen quite a few guests in its 129-year history, and a fair share agree that some areas are off limits to the faint-hearted. These include Room 692, where past guests have reported having pillows yanked from under their sleeping heads, and the main staircase, said to be haunted by the ghost of a bride who had slipped there and died on her wedding day a century ago. Let’s hope the fairy-tale setting is enough of a distraction.
Sabi Sabi Private Game Reserve, South Africa
When this luxury lodge in South Africa was being built, severe floods burst the Sabie River banks and trees, felled by elephants, were washed away. The magnificent but eerily evocative carved wooden bedhead in the Amber Suite (above) is one of those leadwood trees, capturing the spirit and power of the surrounding nature and bushveld setting.
