Well hidden under its modern skyline, a cornucopia of sounds warms up Kuala Lumpur’s nightlife. Malaysia, indeed, is a nation with a strong popular music tradition: local rock supergroups Search and Wings have filled stadiums with thousands of screaming fans since the 1980s. Live music today has gone underground and thrives between the cracks of Kuala Lumpur’s mix of modernity and colonial architecture, where a number of interesting venues offer some of the best blues, jazz, alternative rock and electro-pop in the region. Let’s discover them together.
Hard rock, grunge: The Black Box
If you are brave enough, take a proverbial walk on the wild side where Kuala Lumpur gets the closest to a real rock music joint. Tucked in a corner of trendy shopping complex and art gallery Publika, this black-tinged room boosts one of the best PA systems and stages in the city, and runs the gamut from indie rock to heavy metal. A mainstay for subcultural types, it’s the place to catch international touring bands as you rub elbows with KL’s underground fringe.

Electronica, pop rock: Laundry
Veer to Laundry on Thursday nights for live bands, cocktails and a sleek purplish interior that makes for a cool ambience. Hard rockers beware: the place runs the most melodic gamut of pop rock, and even turns into a full-scale dance club with retro DJ sets on Fridays, and club hits on Saturdays.
