It’s considered the spiritual centre of Tibetan Buddhism and is in a valley in the Himalayas. Because of its high altitude of 3,650m, the city is remote and not easy to access. But should you take the plunge, you’ll find chapels, tombs and the Potala Palace, which was once home to the Dalai Lama in the winter months. And of course, you’ll experience spectacular views of the mighty Himalayas.
It’s been called the city of contradictions, with its constant struggle between old and new. As visitors find themselves transported into a time warp, with old cars and locals playing the guitar on the streets, you’ll find yourself entranced by pictures of Che Guevara just about everywhere you look while you stroll the wide tree-lined avenues. It’ll be pricey, but if you experience Havana before the influx of tourists, it’ll be an incredible story to tell.

No bucket list is complete without Venice. The colourful homes and picturesque canals have made this water city famous, but the architecture and artwork is something that will leave any traveller feeling enchanted. As a result, the lagoon and parts of the city are listed as a World Heritage Site. Venice is seen by many architects as a real miracle as it is essentially a city built on muddy soil.
