10 best things to do in Melbourne after dark

Apr 21, 2017

Melbourne is arguably the coolest city in Australia, with an abundance of activities to do and places to explore round the clock. For night owls, the adventure begins after sunset when the city really comes alive. We count down the 10 best things to do after dark.

See the city light up

Eureka Skydeck 88

Eureka Skydeck 88 is the Southern Hemisphere’s highest viewing platform. The deck is situated next to the famous Yarra River, and boasts 360-degree views including Port Philip Bay, Docklands and Melbourne CBD. Thrill seekers should give ‘The Edge’ a go: it’s a moving glass cube that protrudes outside of the tower allowing floor and ceiling views from about 300m above ground. It’s an observation experience unlike any other.

Readings Carlton has been an independent retailer of books, music and film since 1969 and has become somewhat of a Melbourne icon. The store on Lygon Street draws crowds in the evenings and is a popular hangout spot on Friday and Saturday nights. It is open until 11pm most days and has an extensive evening calendar of events including launches, performances and discussions. In 2016, it was named Bookstore of the Year at the London Book Fair International Excellence Awards. Come and get lost for hours in literature heaven.

Laugh your way into the night

Book of Mormon

If Broadway, New York, or the West End, London are too far, then how about a trip Down Under to see the musical sensation that is The Book Of Mormon? It’s already been hailed as ‘the best musical of this century’ and won nine Tony Awards.

The story follows a pair of mismatched Mormon boys sent on a mission to a place that’s about as far from Salt Lake City as you can get. Not for the easily offended, this show will have you roaring with laughter.

The Crown Melbourne is on the south bank of the Yarra River and is open 24 hours a day for those that have the stamina to keep going till sunrise.

The resort boasts three hotels, function rooms, restaurants, shopping and a host of entertainment facilities. It is actually one of the biggest casino complexes in the world and the hotels have hosted some big names including Tom Cruise, Katy Perry and Kim Kardashian.

There are thousands of electronic gaming machines and table games, if you’re feeling lucky; otherwise, head to one of the many bars or nightclubs within.
