MAESTROS ON THE MOVE

Many writers and artists use travel as their inspiration, and 19th century painter PAUL GAUGUIN was certainly one of the most talented and prolific of this fraternity. His beautiful canvases of places like Tahiti opened up exotic destinations that few of his admirers had ever seen for themselves. On September 30, 2010, London’s Tate Modern will unveil a huge retrospective of this artist, including iconic images of Tahitian women (such as Teha’amana Has Many Parents, 1893, above, right) and spectacular landscapes of Brittany. The exhibition will run till January 16, 2011.

Meanwhile in New York, to coincide with the 175th anniversary of author MARK TWAIN’s birth, an exhibition entitled A Skeptic’s Progress runs from September 17, 2010 to January 2, 2011 at Morgan Library. Expect an impressive collection of manuscripts, rare books (above, left) and letters that highlight his increasingly uneasy, often critical, attitude towards a rapidly modernising America.

TAIWAN WITH A TWIST

While its capital Taipei is what usually figures in tour itineraries, there’s much more to Taiwan than just the city. Bespoke travel firm Black Tomato’s new package explores its off-the-beaten-track locales, with options such as rainforest hikes for adventure seekers, trips to the coral reefs of the south, and stays at hidden gems like the Sun Moon Lake Scenic Area and boutique hotel Silks Place in Taroko Gorge.

PAPER CHAIN

Ultra-light, eco-friendly and carrying the fair trade label, a colourful Candy Cane necklace (US$19) adds pizzazz to any globetrotting woman’s outfit. Part of a wider accessories range, the beads are crafted out of rolled-up strips of recycled paper by disadvantaged women from Bangkok under luxury hospitality group Banyan Tree’s Home Based Production Team project.
