If you’re looking for a holiday that will lift your spirits and clear your mind, these soulful escapes may be just what you need, muses LUCILLE HOWE.

With the uncertain global economic outlook, there is an emerging trend for stripped back vacations with a focus on physically and mentally transformative experiences.
In a recent UK survey, parents say they are ditching expensive theme parks for activities that focus more on their families’ physical and mental well-being – 75 per cent say they plan to include country walks and cycling in their trips. Learning holidays and off-the-beaten-track locales are also gaining ground among holidaymakers, according to the Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA) Travel Trends Report 2012. This might explain the birth of yoga and meditation retreats like Granite Men’s Gathering in New Hampshire in the US. At this men-only retreat, guests can sign up for relationship or stress relief workshops, and even power tools or cooking classes.
It looks like deprivation just got more desirable.

Ayung Sari Indah, Bali
Bootcamp (above), Balinese-style, starts with a sunrise volcano climb, followed by a jungle trek, cycling, yoga and cooking class. Located in the hills outside Ubud, the retreat is all about sharing – whether it’s sharing your thoughts with new friends over dinner in the open-air pavilion, partaking in Balinese traditions by joining a craft workshop or learning to play a traditional musical instrument. |
Simple Juice Healing, West SussexDeprivation in the name of better health is the philosophy of Alliblaster House in the UK. You are put on a juice diet (above) that can last from one day to a week, and given a cocktail of herbs, psyllium husk and bentonite clay to clear your head and clean out your digestive system. There are even fertility and weight loss programmes you can sign up for. Brisk walking is also recommended. simplyhealingcentre.com |
Swag Bag Safari, Sydney
The focus of Swag Bag Safari is on a few key creature comforts like luxe bedding (above) and hot water rather than all-out luxury. So expect to sleep under the stars in a swag bag in the Australian bush. Sure, it’s a posh one with a deck and private shower but you’ll have no mobile phone signal – and nothing but a million stars overhead. Sounds like the perfect opportunity for an aboriginal walkabout (main picture). |
