Scarpa, a second-generation director of homegrown food and beverage company Da Paolo Group, reveals some of her favourite haunts.

FOR DELICIOUS LOCAL FARE, WHERE WOULD YOU HEAD TO?

Straits Kitchen, a halal open kitchen buffet restaurant at the Grand Hyatt hotel, is a great place to indulge in authentic local delights in a casual-chic setting.

WHERE WOULD YOU GO TO SATISFY YOUR SWEET TOOTH?

Gastronomia (a deli-cafe that’s part of the Da Paolo Group), of course. My all-time favourite is the tiramisu, which I eat every day. I also like handmade Nonya (Straits Chinese) desserts from Katong Antique House at 208 East Coast Road. An elderly lady there makes a beautiful assortment of authentic desserts by hand. I particularly love their kuih kosui (sweet cake), which is made with gula melaka (palm sugar) and grated coconut.

WHERE’S THE PERFECT PLACE FOR A GREAT NIGHT OUT?

St James Power Station is an interesting venue, with its great variety of clubs and entertainment options under one roof. Da Paolo Pizza Bar at 44 Jalan Merah Saga is also good. There will be a new menu in February – a highlight is the Pepe-granchio (Italian for pepper crab) pizza. We were inspired by one of Singapore’s most popular local dishes, but added some ricotta and tomatoes to turn it into a unique pizza.

YOUR FAVOURITE BEACH WOULD BE...

On Lazarus Island, just a few minutes from the city. Its white sandy beaches are lined with palm trees and lush tropical foliage, and its turquoise waters so calm.
