Forget mainstream shopping. Head instead to these independent nooks and champions of local creativity for a meaningful Singapore experience and souvenir. By ESTHER AU YONG

Dominic Khoo’s 28th Fevrier

In the words of owner Dominic Khoo, who photographs celebrities and watches, 28th Fevrier is “an indescribable 5-minute space”. This means that its function is fluid – the 550 sq m space (above) has served as an art gallery, event venue, workshop and more.

Tucked away in industrial Bukit Merah, the single storey warehouse space houses not just Khoo’s photo gallery, it also hosts bespoke tailor Kelvin Seah and Ed Et Al, a bespoke shoe label.

If you’re lucky, you might visit during an interesting event, like the recent book launch by chef Janice Wong of 2am:dessertbar. That event saw desserts being hung from the ceiling, on canvasses and from walls.

The J.Myers Company

A young 20something Jeremiah Ang pursued leathercraft as a hobby for two years before establishing The J.Myers Company in July 2010.

Using tools and leather from English, Italian and American tanneries, Ang creates briefcases, totes (right) and smartphone cases which are largely customised to his customers’ needs. While his workshop in Chinatown remains a by-appointment-only venue, Ang says this year will see “the launch of our new ready-made line”. This will also give him more time to pursue his personal passion of creating watch straps from exquisite skins like alligator and snake.

Prices start from S$100 for a basic calfskin iPhone case to S$600 for a leather tote.
