As international brand ambassadress for Cointreau liqueur, burlesque dancer Dita Von Teese has been thrilling the crowds worldwide with her beguiling Be Cointreauversial show. She speaks to EVA WONG about her fashion favourites and beauty must-haves for travelling.

1. Your costumes – especially your corsets – look punishing to wear. What do you put on off-stage, say, when you’re travelling?
I do dress down, but in my own way, with a sense of elegance. My typical travel wardrobe is a mid-length cotton dress, usually by designer Rachel Pally; medium-heeled well-made shoes – such as those by Christian Louboutin – that I can walk through airports in; great sunglasses to hide the fact that I am wearing only lipstick and no other makeup, and a fabulous coat. My favourite coat is a Dior trench with structured shoulders and bugle beads dripping from the bottom. It's perhaps a little over-the-top, but I wear it all the time. As a showgirl, I think a little sparkle in the day is appropriate!
2. How did you decide that the image of a vintage pin-up girl was perfect for you?
When I realised I wasn't a natural beauty, but that there was a way to attain glamour. I started refining my look when I was about 18, by researching various vintage styles in depth, practising recreating these looks on myself and getting better at it over the past 20 years.
3. Do you always take your inspiration from the past?
I think that things from the past were made with both function and artful design. There are very few modern appliances and things made with anything other than function and simplicity in mind. Whenever I can, I buy things with a sense of glamour... be it a laptop case, a suitcase or a pen!
4. What are five essential items in your luggage when you travel?
I have far more than five essentials! But to name a few, I always have my beauty kit (which includes my moisturiser, powder foundation, lipstick, a toothbrush, makeup wipes, heated hair rollers and other hair tools), lingerie, a dressing gown and plenty of vitamins.
5. What music do you like to listen to while on a flight?
For relaxation, I listen to either retro music like Billie Holiday or electronic music on my iPod. I do love modern electronic music, which is probably due to the fact that I used to be a dancer on the LA rave scene from 1990 to 1995. Bands I like are The Presets, Cut Copy, Crystal Castles and Monarchy. For my performances, I have all my big-band music made for me by Chuck Henry, a great composer and arranger.
6. Where are we most likely to run into you on vacation?
I love going on tropical vacations and holidays where I can become more in tune with my body, like at a health resort. I love Chiva-Som in Thailand, Canyon Ranch in Tucson, Arizona, and the Conrad Rangali Island Maldives Hotel.
