Located about 330km south of Kunming, the capital of Yunnan province, Yuanyang county is home to arguably the most spectacular terraced rice fields in the world. The fields, which are awaiting possible UNESCO World Heritage site listing, have been cultivated by the indigenous Hani people for centuries. Measuring some 13,190ha, the expanse of paddy fields constitute a unique self-sustaining ecosystem – the terraces and surrounding forests are integrated perfectly with the lifestyle of the population. Besides the Hani tribe, the area is also home to other ethnic minority groups such as the Dai and Yi.

The best time to visit these magnificent rice fields is from December to April. This is when villagers flood the terraces in preparation for ploughing. The water in the fields reflect the sunshine, creating the gorgeous colours that many have come to associate with this man-made wonder.

If you are visiting Yuanyang, a trip to the local fair or market is well worth the effort. Soak in the lively atmosphere and marvel at the colourful ethnic costumes as you wander among the indigenous villagers who head to the market for business and to socialise.
