A veritable mountain of wind-carved sand, the Great Dune of Pyla, located some 60km from Bordeaux in France, strikes a majestic sight as it straddles the blue expanse of the Atlantic Ocean on one side and the lush greenery of the Landes pine forest on the other. Measuring over 100m in height, the dune is the tallest of its kind in Europe. But as the sand is moved and shaped by the wind, the size of the dune changes with the passing of time. Currently standing at about 500m across and less than 3km in length, it’s a popular spot for thrill seekers such as paragliders and sandboarders. And as it is a prime tourist attraction in Cote d’Argent, you’ll find vendors selling snacks like ice cream and buckwheat crepes, and souvenirs at its base.
Hike up to the top of the dune for a superb view of the Bay of Arcachon to the north and on a clear day, The Pyrenees mountains in the far distance to the south. From the summit, it’s a great sandy slide down to the sea – and a long haul back up – but the thrill is well worth the effort.
