A town in north Morocco, Chefchaouen is distinctive for its blue buildings – in all its different shades and hues. Situated beneath the striking peaks of Rif Mountains, just inland from Tangier and Tetouan, it was founded in 1471 as a small fortress by Moorish exiles from Spain. In 1920, Chefchaouen was annexed as part of Spanish Morocco. The town, whose name refers to the shape of the mountaintops above it (they look like the two horns of a goat), gained independence in 1956, along with Morocco.

Besides being a popular tourist destination, it is also a great shopping haunt for native handicrafts such as colourful wool garments and woven blankets. The area’s signature goat cheese is also popular with visitors.
